For Sale & Free is Nextdoor's seller marketplace to buy, exchange, and sell goods within a local community. We were seeing a decline in user activity to listings, messages from listings, and sharing.

Our approach was to find data-driven solutions through a series of rapid experiments and iterations to grow the For Sale & Free user base and number of listings, as well as help sellers sell their items faster.

Outcome

We were able to achieve stat-sig increases, which gave us positive signal that users were engaging with listings more and, ultimately, helping users get their items sold. We increased buyer messages by +15%, new user registration by +31%, and sharing by +18%. Additionally, we introduced relevant ads on For Sale & Free, which increased ad opportunities, impressions, and revenue by +25%.

Redesigning and including relevant ads to the For Sale & Free feed resulted in +25% increase in revenue
One-click messaging + sharing options on listings resulted in +15% increase of buyer messages and +18% in listing shares
Testing multiple iterations of logged out views of For Sale & Free and landing on our option that resulted in +31% increase of new user registrations
